Newborn Photo Session Preparation Guide
When to book your newborn session…
The best time to photograph a newborn baby is when they are under two weeks of age: they sleep more soundly, allowing me to pose them to create the very best portraits. Babies are also more flexible at this stage. Older babies tend to be more alert and restless, a little harder to settle and things like colic and baby acne can start to flare up. You can contact us at any time during your pregnancy to give me an estimated due date, we will then make a tentative booking and when you arrive home from hospital with your brand new baby you can contact us to arrange a suitable time and day for your session.
Where your session is held…
Your newborn session will take place in our studio in Indianapolis, Indiana, where I have all the props available. The studio kept at 80F for the baby’s comfort, especially if we do nude poses.
How long will your session take...
The key to successful session is a deep sleeping baby! Remember, the session might last up to 4 hours (make sure you have had a good breakfast, if not I always keep some healthy organic snack packages in my studio.
How can I prepare my new baby for the photo session...
* Schedule feeding 1-2 hours before arrival
* Interact with your baby for at least 1-2 hours before your scheduled session to keep him/her awake. This means keeping them awake during the car ride ;) I know, I know, it is very hard, but try your best!
* Dress your baby in comfortable clothes with button up or zip up clothing for easier transition. Please DO NOT dress the baby in anything that I will have to pull over the head.
* Pacifier...Please bring it with you, it helps to calm your baby down during transition poses... If you don't have one, I will be more than happy to provide one to your baby during session...
* Bottle...Even if you are a breastfeeding mom, please, try to pump a little bit of milk: while baby is posed, it's so much easier to give baby a bottle instead of me trying to repose him/her after feeding.
* Dressing tips for parents: Beige/ cream/ white all would look amazing for your baby’s newborn pictures no matter what gender your baby is! Gray, blush, or brown are also great options. Pastels like soft blue or blush pink are beautiful as well. Same applies to significant others and siblings.
* Siblings... I always welcome siblings to come and be a part of the family photos. Please, try to keep them calm during the session since a quiet atmosphere is very important in obtaining newborn photos. You might consider to drive two cars and have someone available to take the sibling home after they are done their part for their own safety. Remember, I have very limited space in my home studio plus newborn sessions might take up to 3-4 hours and siblings will get bored very quickly.
What to expect...
I will guide you through every single step and pose! I always start my sessions with a wrapped baby, it allows an easy way for mom , dad and siblings to be involved, plus those are my “safety” shots; even if baby is fully awake, I still can produce beautiful images of wide open eyes.
“My baby doesn’t like to be wrapped?!” Believe me, they do! They are used to be in your belly for the past 9 month; they actually feel more secured being wrapped...Trust me!
Usually, I start with mom, will add dad, and siblings if there are any (since they are the one who loose patience fast) and will then move to the baby itself.
I do try to do at least three different set ups, but it all depends on baby. And, PLEASE, DO NOT worry about your baby having accidents on my props! So many parents worry about that – but I am used to it, and I am well prepared for any type of accidents! All of my props are washable and been hand washed after every use with perfume free detergent....
While I photograph the baby, I want parents to be relaxed; take a nap; I know what sleepless nights are like, so if you do need to take a time off, just let me know and I will supervise you to a quiet room where you can get yourself under warm blanket in front of TV, and take a small nap...
Maternity Photo Session Preparation Guide
For many moms-to-be, the idea of maternity images is exciting as the idea of having a baby itself. To others, it is a questionable, since your body has transformed to a place you might not have imaged it ever going.
While it might be your first or your third pregnancy, each will deliver you an experience that is unique to this world. That deserves to be captured. If even there is a time to entrust yourself to the hands of a professional photographer, it is during this time. Professional maternity photography is not a snap for an Instagram shot or a few shots taken on a phone at your kitchen. It is working with someone who understands that certain poses will photograph better than others, that lighting is a key, and with bit of guidance, you will look as amazing!
When to book your maternity session…
The best time for your maternity session is around 28-34 weeks: your belly is full and round, but you are still comfortable to pose. For expecting mamas with twins (or more), come in earlier around 26 – 32 weeks since twins tend to arrive earlier. I have had a maternity sessions close to delivery day with beautiful results, but I would rather have clients towards the earlier side, where mamas-to-be are feeling their best. However, it is completely up to you at what stage you would like your maternity photos taken.
For you session, I provide you with the option of shooting in a private location such as your home, outdoor or the studio.
When considering the location for your maternity shoot, keep in mind the advantages/disadvantages of them.
Indoor (e.g. in the home)
Advantage: comfort and connection to familiar surroundings. No need to worry about the weather.
Disadvantage: you have to clean your house so it looks good for the photos. The lighting may not be ideal, and I might have to use a camera flash if necessary.
Advantage: convenience and control, no dependence on a weather and time of the day. Couture maternity dresses are available on a spot
Advantage: the pure beauty of a pregnant woman in an outdoor background is simply amazing! It is something about a mother bringing a new life into the world; and Mother Nature is a super powerful one.
Disadvantages: weather-dependent and shooting hours are limited to the golden hour of sunrise or sunset (to avoid harsh shadows). Reschedules can happen and may trigger the rescheduling of other related appointments (professional makeup and hair artist and etc). Be prepared to walk/hike to the location and change outfits outdoors. For any outdoor session, I do carry a bottle of a bug spray with me.
Professional make up and hair...
I highly recommend professional makeup and hair. Not only will this make my work easier, but you will feel confident and beautiful during your session. However, if it’s not in the budget, your going-out-on-a-hot-date makeup and hair are fine too. Your hands will be photographed on your belly, so, please keep in mind while choosing the nail polish color (French style or plain natural work great)

The beauty of working with Olivia, she will come to your place and will make you looking your best
Unfortunately, hair style is totally on you
Trust me to direct you in posing so you can look your best. There are some posing tricks to empathize the beautiful curves of your belly and body. Maternity photos focus on you, your personality, feelings and the bond you have with your awaited baby.
What to wear...
I do have a collection of couture maternity gowns that I provide for maternity portraits to my clients. During the consultation you could try those on prior the session...
If you prefer a natural look, here is a list of some simple ideas:
Buttoned shirt and regular jeans (Not maternity one)
Long, flowy or form-fitting dress: tube dress or a summer maxi dress
Don't forget accessories, jewelries, scarfs, etc...
White/Baby Blue/Grey, any natural solid color shirt and classic pants or jeans (for significant other/husband)
Clothing with multiple patterns or large logos can become a distraction. Strong prints and abstract patterns can overpower your photo.
If you are even considering a maternity shoot, but are afraid you may be uncomfortable with your body, leave it to Tatiana to make you feel like a queen!! I contemplated for the longest on doing one because I wasn’t comfortable with my body and after she sent me the photos I was speechless! I am so glad she talked me into it and I’m more than glad I trusted her to work her magic. I cannot wait for her to do my daughter's newborn pictures. She’s truly amazing at what she does!
